Tom and Murray are really happy to announce that they are taking part in the Mystery Box Rally in 2019!
They both have their stories.
Murray was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2017. Since his diagnosis he went through a series of treatments, including radiation, chemotherapy and operations in mid-2018. With the support of his wife Andi and his 4 daughters he fought hard and is currently fighting fit and all clear.
Tom had a small scare with a tumor in his appendix in May 2017. His main inspiration for taking part in the Rally is his mother-in law Arlene who battled with pancreatic cancer for nearly 2 years before passing in August 2018. Undergoing a large operation and a significant number of chemotherapy treatments, Arlene showed an immense fighting spirit and never stopped fighting until the very end.
Although the above were trying times and impacted their friends and family in different ways it has motivated both Murray and Tom to raise money for the Cancer Council, and what better way than driving a little $200 Daihatsu Charade around the country.
They hope you can get on board to support them and follow their journey.
The Mystery Box Rally is one of the largest community lead fundraising events for the Cancer Council in Australia having raised over $3.5 million in the last 6 years. Part of the requirements for the participation is to raise a minimum of $3,500 but they hope to raise well above this amount.
These funds go to the Cancer Council and they are extremely proud to be doing their part to support such a worthy charity. The Cancer Council do some awesome work supporting people with cancer, and funding important research.
Fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow their progress via this page and the blog post below.
Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5-day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."
