Our Story …

Matt and I are excited to announce that we're taking part in Mystery Box Rally in August 2019!! It means that we will do a road trip in a car older than 25 years (a pre-requisite) - and, after a false start with a fuel guzzling 1988 Ford Panel Van - 4ltr, 3 on the tree which had to be scrapped shortly after we bought it, we are pleased to introduce to you our 1993 Mazda 121 Fun Top !

We head out from Byron Bay and return 5 days later, and where we go in between is a mystery! We will be sleeping out under the stars, travelling in convoy with other teams, donning fancy dress in PJ and Winter Olympics themes (that will be interesting) and hopefully our new Bubble will make it back without breaking down! Have a look at the video on this page from 2018 to see what it will be like. (and see below the comments we add as we prepare for and travel on the rally).

Mystery Box Rally is one of the largest community lead fundraising events for the Cancer Council in Australia having raised over $3.5 million in the last 6 years. Part of the requirements for our participation is to raise a minimum of $3,500 but we hope to raise well above this amount. These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. They do some awesome work supporting people with cancer, and funding important research. Matt and I have been very fortunate that cancer hasn't affected our family like it has so many others, but that doesn't mean we aren't acutely aware of the need to raise funds for research and support. What an engaging way to help contribute to a much needed charity.

Fundraising is the hard part (and we actually have set donation targets to achieve - $2000 by mid June and $3000 by mid July !), so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated (over $2 is tax deductible and you will receive a receipt as soon as the transaction is complete - just scroll down to the 'DONATE NOW' tab). Thanks in advance for any support you can give us by donating and a HUGE thank you to everyone who has already made a donation, we are very appreciate of the support.

Tash xx

Here's what I'm doing …

Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5-day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."

Sneak peak of our new rally car !! It's having a once over by our mechanic, but we are so excited - it feels like we are now well on the journey towards 5 days of crazy rallying out from Byron in August in this petrol-guzzling jalopy! Just quietly, we are feeling the itch to change our team name to something that reflects this Aussie icon....!

Its official - our Aussie Icon dream car has seen better days and is headed for the scrap yard: Our mechanic broke the news to us that the chassis damage was extensive and irreparable! Clearly a trap for rookie players - and a reminder that you get what you pay for! But look at those curtains … and it had a mattress and a detachable roof mounted awning. It was going to be perfect for the rally - but alas, is not meant to be. But we haven't wasted any time doing our due diligence on a replacement ....

So ... Please meet our new (replacement) wheels, a 1993 Mazda 121 Fun Top.... we are excited about our little Bubble and the MTA inspection and mechanic have given it a clean bill of health! It's not quite the Aussie icon that the Panel Van was, but the 'Bubble' holds lots of fond memories for many people and will be so much fun, while we participate in this fabulous charity rally. Keep an eye out for updates as we dress her up for the rally....

PS: thank you so much to everyone who has already donated to Cancer Council in support of our entry - its very much appreciated :-)

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Mystery Box Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Mystery Box Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

$41 million over the past 13 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

 • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
 • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
 • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
