Our Story …

Peer and I, Lars are suddenly “The Grey Vikings” however, we believe

“TEAMWORK IS THE SECRET THAT MAKE COMMON PEOPLE ACHIEVE UNCOMMON RESULTS.”

We are really happy to announce that we're taking part in Mystery Box Rally in 2019!! Mystery Box Rally is one of the largest community lead fundraising events for the Cancer Council in Australia. The reason we are doing this relates to both of us starting 2019 attending funerals of no less than 3 people whom we lost to cancer.

I will be telling their stories on our blog as we move forward. Why raise money for the Cancer Council, to that we answer why not? My wife had a hip replacement on the 8th of January, and 5 weeks later she is almost back to pain free, that miracle was created by research dollars to come up with procedures / robotics / material / design / rehab and skilled surgeons, all enabled by research in this field for which I am extremely thankful today.

Cancer is present among friends/family & colleagues of us all, so Peer and I decided to no longer sit on the sideline but actually to let’s do this…That was the easy part; now we realize we are team number 146 out of a 150, so hardly the early starters, and as far as choice of vehicle I let my very good friend Peer decide……  I have a feeling if you are a Volvo fanatic or a purist, you may find it hard to follow our journey!!! Peer has the technical skill and love for Volvos to get it going, I have the grinder and welder and I’m not afraid to use either.

The Box rally has raised over $3.5 million in the last 6 years, this year the target is $1,000,000. Part of the requirements for The Grey Vikings to participate is to raise a minimum of $3,500 but we have set our personal goals to $10.000 and clearly hope to raise well above this amount. For this we need your help in so many amazing ways. These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. They do awesome work supporting people with cancer and funding important research.

Fundraising is the hardest part we’re told, so for The Grey Vikings any donation you can give is not only greatly appreciated but also tax deductible. The Grey Vikings are pleased to invite you to follow our progress via this page and our blog post. You will hopefully come to appreciate English is not our first language, at this stage the car we intend to drive 2500 kilometers off the grid hardly exists, nor does it speak English.

Our total lack of video /camera skills are also challenges that will no doubt be part of the journey. Either way we are human, young at heart and both born Vikings who have loved and lost and committed to honor the memory of these people. We are absolutely committed to making a difference for the living.

Peer and I strongly believe,

“It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness”.

Help us turn Hope into reality, The Grey Vikings will fight for this cause and with your help we can conquer our fund raising target. However, Peer won’t let me carry out the proper Viking tradition, when Vikings landed on the shores of the land destined for conquering they burned the boats, at least there was no going back…, except that Peer has imposed a fire ban on the Volvo!!!

Here's what I'm doing …

Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5 day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."

I promise I'll say thank you when we sit at a resort in Byron around the 22nd of August after a shower and the beast has made it back, but our rusty, trusty steed is inspiring hope, may be a strange colour, enough holes to make up for lack of aircon, but that pile of 41 year old nuts and bolt's will be the Candle lightning machine rather than the cursor of the darkness. So my brother I'm right here in rust and dirt till the dusty end of this adventure and lets kick Cancer..... Can we put a V8 in for heart transplant purposes ?

Dear Mira Thank You. for supporting a couple of graying Vikings, in honoring our loved ones. However strange it is to buy a rusted bucket of bolts called a Volvo and drive thousands (hopefully) of kilometers in order to raise funds to kick cancer.... It may seem strange, but we are absolutely about creating Hope, not only hoping the old car will take us all the way, but bringing hope to the was amount of family and friends who are currently battling cancer. We are looking forward to kicking cancer and your help to do this is amazing. Peer & Lars

Hi you two, your days changed massively with the loss of Hans & Marie and your help with my journey on the grief quest is absolutely appreciated. Since Feb I have spent a 138 hour on the car, and structurally is is like it was when it rolled of the factory line, Peer and his son Ryan both worked on the car and today, we put the thing back together. It is registered and has new tyres, brakes, radiator and refurbished engine... so really we have a 41 year old new car with aircon,, power steering, central locking etc.. but as Peer and I talk about it is not about our comfort it is about raising funds for eradication of cancer.. So Peer is available for hugs , yes you too Michael when you come down for a visit. Thanks a bunch Sis Love you guys. Peer & Lars

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Mystery Box Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Mystery Box Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

Over $13 million has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

  • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
  • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
  • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
