Peer and I, Lars are suddenly “The Grey Vikings” however, we believe
“TEAMWORK IS THE SECRET THAT MAKE COMMON PEOPLE ACHIEVE UNCOMMON RESULTS.”
We are really happy to announce that we're taking part in Mystery Box Rally in 2019!! Mystery Box Rally is one of the largest community lead fundraising events for the Cancer Council in Australia. The reason we are doing this relates to both of us starting 2019 attending funerals of no less than 3 people whom we lost to cancer.
I will be telling their stories on our blog as we move forward. Why raise money for the Cancer Council, to that we answer why not? My wife had a hip replacement on the 8th of January, and 5 weeks later she is almost back to pain free, that miracle was created by research dollars to come up with procedures / robotics / material / design / rehab and skilled surgeons, all enabled by research in this field for which I am extremely thankful today.
Cancer is present among friends/family & colleagues of us all, so Peer and I decided to no longer sit on the sideline but actually to let’s do this…That was the easy part; now we realize we are team number 146 out of a 150, so hardly the early starters, and as far as choice of vehicle I let my very good friend Peer decide…… I have a feeling if you are a Volvo fanatic or a purist, you may find it hard to follow our journey!!! Peer has the technical skill and love for Volvos to get it going, I have the grinder and welder and I’m not afraid to use either.
The Box rally has raised over $3.5 million in the last 6 years, this year the target is $1,000,000. Part of the requirements for The Grey Vikings to participate is to raise a minimum of $3,500 but we have set our personal goals to $10.000 and clearly hope to raise well above this amount. For this we need your help in so many amazing ways. These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. They do awesome work supporting people with cancer and funding important research.
Fundraising is the hardest part we’re told, so for The Grey Vikings any donation you can give is not only greatly appreciated but also tax deductible. The Grey Vikings are pleased to invite you to follow our progress via this page and our blog post. You will hopefully come to appreciate English is not our first language, at this stage the car we intend to drive 2500 kilometers off the grid hardly exists, nor does it speak English.
Our total lack of video /camera skills are also challenges that will no doubt be part of the journey. Either way we are human, young at heart and both born Vikings who have loved and lost and committed to honor the memory of these people. We are absolutely committed to making a difference for the living.
Peer and I strongly believe,
“It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness”.
Help us turn Hope into reality, The Grey Vikings will fight for this cause and with your help we can conquer our fund raising target. However, Peer won’t let me carry out the proper Viking tradition, when Vikings landed on the shores of the land destined for conquering they burned the boats, at least there was no going back…, except that Peer has imposed a fire ban on the Volvo!!!
But ......
Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5-day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.
Thanks to the community funds raised such as Mystery Box Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.
