Jake and Tegan here, 2 old friends off on an outback adventure for the Mystery Box Rally 2019.
In 2015 Tegan lost her mother just 7 weeks after she was diagnosed with lung cancer, she was 65. Not long after this Jake was recovering from a double knee reconstruction when a tumour was discovered on his lower intestine and his appendix at the age of 29. While the tumour was removed Jake is still undergoing regular invasive check-ups and has had to leave the military.
In the years since both Jake and Tegan have had friends and family members lost to or diagnosed with various forms of cancer. It’s an awful fact of life that everybody knows somebody who has been touched by cancer.
The Mystery Box Rally will take teams on a 5 day trek through Australia’s toughest terrain to raise vital funds for the Cancer Council. We’ll be driving our 25 year old shitbox ‘Jake's Revenge' 2,500km in a convoy of eclectic cars from Byron Bay and back in August 2019. Where are we off to? Will our car make it? Did we pack enough clean undies? That’s the mystery!
Part of the requirements for our participation is to raise a minimum of $3,500 but we hope to raise well above this amount. These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. They do some awesome work supporting people with cancer, and funding important research. Fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.
Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5-day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."
