Three years ago Andrew suddenly lost a great friend to lung cancer; he has another friend who is terminally ill with kidney cancer. Chrissy's mother also died of lung cancer. Chrissy’s brother's long life partner Karen, has just been diagnosed with breast cancer, and her close friends Jo and Sarah have previously beaten this terrible disease.
We are doing Mystery Box Rally because we care and want to help put an end to this heartbreak! Combining our love of old cars and an adventure, this is the perfect way of having fun while supporting the important work of the Cancer Council.
'CLAS' is an acronym of our initials so our team name CRUIZIN WITH CLAS was born. We will be driving our mighty merc, ”C’MON GET HAPPY”, and we are planning to do just that, along with raising money for a great cause. We are super excited to announce that we've been confirmed and will hit the road on 17th August 2019.
BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Part of our minimum requirement is to raise $3500 and we hope to raise well above this amount. This is the only hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Donations $2 and above are tax deductible.
So C’MON GET HAPPY while CRUIZIN WITH CLAS. Be sure to watch out for postings of photos during our adventure and check our progress via this page and the blog post below. Thank you for your support.
Love, peace and strength, Chrissy L & Andrew S (aka CLAS)
Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5 day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."
Had our Mystery Box serviced and a general check over today. She's in good nick and has the green light to go on the Rally. Hooray! Will just need the alternator and power steering belts replaced as a precaution before we set off from Byron in August. Now for the transformation....stay tuned everybody.
Andrew has ordered chocolates at his workplace to sell to support our fundraising, however Chrissy is a self-confessed chocoholic and is not sure when they are arriving as she can only see her own personal stash.
A big thank you to all our supporters for your kind and generous donations so far, and for buying chocolates and lucky number tickets!
When donating please feel welcome to mention the names of people you are donating in honour of. If you are currently battling or are a cancer survivor, please share this also if you'd like to.
Well done Chrissy for an extraordinary effort in raising these offline funds in an Easter Raffle that has driven us over the $3500 mark! We could not have achieved this ahead of schedule without everyone's kind support - thank you. This rally is all about fundraising for cancer research, so we have upped our target to $5000. Please donate any amount. AS from CLAS :)
We have created a Facebook page...the link is fb.me/cancercouncilcruizinwithclas so check it out. We will be posting on the Cancer Council website (this website) and the Cruizin with CLAS facebook page as well...so please check us out.
First we have our mighty merc before the work begins...
Then we start with the sketches and the outline...
The yellow goes on first...we are started to get excited...
Andrew performing the tricky roof...all part of the plan!
Now we are with the colour red...Andrew hard at work.
Red and yellow in progress, part of roof, passenger and drivers side, and Chrissy at work!..
Red, yellow and blue with a dash of black, first without coloured wheels and then with coloured wheel...all coming along nicely
Starting with the back, with the big red diamond, and finishing with all colours. Names of special people that we will be remembering will go on just before we head off to our rally in August.
So fits the 70's era of having "a tiger in the tank", or a "nodding tiger doll" sitting in the back, but Casanova (Chrissy's cat) just wants to be part of the action.
Look to the left, look to the right, look to the left again...what is Casanova the cat looking at...oh it is Andrew!!
And you think we were not going to pay attention to the roof...
Front of car...how is that for a transformation...spot the difference!!
The Mystery Box Rally Cancer Council sticker is now on!! Yes, there was a reason why there was a gap!
TIP! To see our photo uploads, click on the photo you want to view and the photos will enlarge...note IT issue that some photos once enlarged are upside down, sideways etc, does anyone know how to fix this???
We also have a Facebook Page at fb.me/cancercouncilcruizinwithclas you can view, Facebook users can also get updates of what we are doing if you “Like” our Page and “follow” us.
Working on our design for a solid two or so months, our mighty merc "C'mon Get Happy" was not so happy and we thought she had a flat battery, but it ended up being a minor electrical connection fault. So we had to call on RACQ to get her towed, and we would like to report she is all happy again, and has done some short trips which I will post soon. The RACQ were all impressed with our Partridge Family bus design and gave us the thumbs up!
Our trip around Redcliffe and catching up with some people along the way.
Last weekend visiting Andrew's friend Anna and her family near Mt Crosby. We are getting in the spirit of our fabulous Partridge Family bus theme.
Tripping around Mt Crosby way, no petrol station in sight!
We had a little mishap about a month ago when Andrew drove "C'mon get Happy" aka his mighty merc to work, and he got as far at the car park and the muffler fell off to the amusement of Liz, a dear friend and a work colleague, well it was only a minor repair, and just needed to be put back on more firmly by an expert.
Talking about experts, the second photo we are all expecting under the bonnet but Andrew and Chrissy had no idea what we were looking for...but great photo regardless. :)
On a long pre-rally test run our mighty merc ran beautifully all the way to Bundaberg/Bargara visiting Andrew's school friend Kathleen and family. Plenty of power for overtaking, comfortable and a pleasure to drive. Idyllic Bargara turned on the weather and it was a wonderful weekend by the sea.
Our Merc had some minor mechanical work carried out this week and we are pleased to say she is purring like a kitten and gearing up for the rally. The count-down is now on with just 14 days to go! A BIG THANK YOU to Brian, Chris and the trusted team at Michlin Motors for helping us get on our way!
To Chrissy, it is all about The Partridge Family bus, while others just think our Mystery box rally car is just plain cool. But our admirer who left our "C'mon get Happy" mighty merc an appreciation note below loved our car because they love the artist painter Mondrain, which I might add was the inspiration behind The Partridge Family bus, which in turned inspired us!
Today we worked on the dedications of close family and friends, and also fine tuned our infamous C'mon Get Happy mighty merc. Only two weeks away until we are travelling inland NSW to a place of unknown destinations. We also acknowledge all the donations we have been given, some with special dedications made. We will be taking a photo at various spots, for each special dedication made to those who generously donated and provided us names of who they dedicated their donation for - CLAS
Andrew's work colleagues put on an amazing surprise pre-rally morning tea today with congrats on our fundraising efforts. A dazzling banner with our team name CRUIZIN WITH CLAS featured prominently in the office. Judy and Joanne made the most incredible lemon cake of our rally car with intricate detail right down to the steering wheel, spare tyres we'll be taking, and Andrew & Chrissy (with her red hair) standing on the roof. It was totally delectable! Andrew's manager presented a laminated copy of C'MON GET HAPPY that everyone had signed with personal messages of best wishes and good luck. How fortunate we are! We could not have done it without your wonderful support!
How awesome re Andrew's (AS) last post. Even though I have been slaving away at work and now I hear about this!! Cake and chocolates that I missed out on not to mention the social gathering. That is what you have to sacrifice when working in the city!! Looks fabulous and love the group photo and card, and of course the cake! (CL)
Greetings from Byron! Had our pre-rally briefing tonight - tank is full and Team CRUIZIN WITH CLAS is ready to rally!
Today we paid tribute to Maureen Pratt who's ashes were scattered over the bay at Byron. Most appropriate that the rally started and finished here. The bay was glistening with sundrenched water and a butterfly danced by with grace and beauty. It was perfect.
We had a great write up in the local paper and didn't realise it had been published until today! See below link.
