In March 2018 our life's changed massively, I (Melissa) was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. We had a hard year with me having major surgery with half my pancreas removed and my spline. I had a few ups and downs with some post op dramas with a few hospital visits and then in July I started 6 months of intense chemo, I would sit in a chair at Newcastle Mater Hospital every 2nd Monday for 7 hours with my amazing Husband Scott sitting right beside me and then I'd go home with a pump for 3 days as another part of treatment. Due to the surgery and the chemo treatment I ended up with diabetes. My husband, children and close family seen me fall and helped me up but with all there support we fought this together and WE WON OUR FIGHT...I got through the treatment finishing it on the 3rd December. I was told on the 7th of January 2019 that the treatment was a success I was Cancer free but have to stay that way for 5 years and this is something that I intend to do. This Rally means a lot to us as the Cancer Council helped us in so many ways and we really want to give something back. we had always planned to do a rally like this but hadn't due to thinking we were to busy and worked too much so our kick in the butt is our way of waking up and realising there is more to life and to take the time to get a few things off our bucket list and help others in need.
Teams will drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5 day challenge, all in the name of cancer research. The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."
